Precautions for installing J1939 cable

J1939 cable is mainly used in Controller Area Network (CAN) systems in the fields of automobiles, ships, etc., to achieve high-speed data communication between various Electronic Control Units (ECUs). When installing J1939 cables, the following precautions should be taken:

Cleaning and Alignment: Before connecting cables and connectors, clean the pins and sockets of the connectors with a clean cloth or specialized cleaning agent to remove dust, oil, and oxides, ensuring good electrical connection. Then align the connector accurately and gently insert it to ensure that the pins are perfectly matched with the socket, avoiding any bending or damage to the pins caused by forced insertion.

Crimping or tightening: For crimping connectors, use appropriate crimping pliers to crimp according to the specified crimping process to ensure a firm crimping and low contact resistance. For threaded connectors, use a wrench or screwdriver to tighten to the specified torque to prevent the connector from loosening.

After installation

Conductivity test: Use a multimeter or specialized cable tester to conduct a conductivity test on the installed J1939 cable, checking whether the core wires of the cable are well connected and whether there are any short circuits, open circuits, or other issues. Ensure that the signal can be transmitted normally in the cable.

Terminal resistance check: Suitable terminal resistors, usually 120 Ω, need to be installed at both ends of the J1939 network. Check if the terminal resistor is installed correctly and if the resistance value meets the requirements to ensure impedance matching of the network, prevent signal reflection, and ensure communication quality.

System testing: After completing cable installation and preliminary testing, connect the device to the J1939 network for system level communication testing. Check whether the communication between each ECU can be normal, whether the data transmission is accurate and stable, and whether there are any packet loss, error code and other phenomena. If there are any issues, promptly investigate whether there are problems with cable installation or whether the equipment settings are correct.
